- OLYMPIANS: 123-52 Win
East tops Cubs on senior night
By Ted Schultz -
The Columbus East boys and girls swimmers hadn’t competed in 3½ weeks, but that didn’t stop the Olympians from going out on senior night and putting up some career-best times on Tuesday night.
The efforts allowed the Olympian boys to post a 100-79 win against Madison and the girls to come away with a 123-52 victory.
“We have been training a lot and training hard,” East girls coach Jill Arnholt said. “I was hoping they would come out and smash it because we needed to compete. We needed to race. They did great tonight. They had best times, they had good races and I think they were just happy to be competing. The girls swam really well, and I’m really happy with them.”
Kerigan Greathouse won the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 13.99 seconds) and 500 freestyle (6:07.24) and Ellie Proffitt took the 200 individual medley (2:24.05) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.40) to lead the girls. Josie Havenaar captured the 100 backstroke (1:10.94), and the other individual winners were seniors — Marin Wieneke in the 50 freestyle (26.29), Cloie McDonald in the diving competition (196.65) and Caroline Andress in the 100 freestyle (1:03.98).

“It felt amazing,” Andress said. “It was a great night for everybody, and everyone got a bunch of PRs. We’re all super excited, and we’ve been working really hard these past couple of weeks.”
The Olympian girls also swept the 200 medley (2:02.15), 200 freestyle (1:54.04) and 400 freestyle (1:54.04) relays.
For the East boys, Brady Beyer won the 200 freestyle (1:50.63) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.95), and senior Chad Kelly took the 50 freestyle (23.34) and 100 freestyle (51.66).
“I think we had really good swims,” Kelly said. “This week, we’ve been working on our mental game, as well as our physical, and we’re getting a lot tougher in both areas. We still have a lot to improve on, and I’m looking forward to the end of the season.”
Senior Mason Curry also was a winner, taking the 100 butterfly in 56.71.
“It felt really good because this is my last year, and all I really wanted to do was make a good example for these boys so they can get better,” Curry said.
Also for the Olympians, Mark Mathis won the diving (157.80), and Dathan Wolf took the 100 backstroke (59.88). East captured the 200 medley (1:44.08) and 400 freestyle relays (3:28.66).
The girls will compete in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet Saturday at Floyd Central. The boys HHC meet is Jan. 30.
