SHELBYVILLE — One stat that stood out for Columbus East that might haunt them in the offseason: errors.
The Olympians made mistakes that led to several runs, and it eventually played into the outcome of the game Tuesday night when they fell to Bloomington North 12-5 in the opening round of the Shelbyville softball sectional.
Even though East didn’t finish the season the way it wanted, East coach Rusty Brummett said the team improved throughout the season.
“From the first game we played to the last couple of ball games, you can see a definite improvement,” Brummett said. “We were much better at the plate. We were more disciplined and doing a lot of things well. Our pitchers were hitting spots, and we were challenging our pitchers very early on in the season with only two of them being sophomores. It was a learning experience for them.”
The Cougars struck first in the top of the second when Madeline Schultz singled. Alyssa Frye singled to move Schultz to third and then scored off a Columbus East error to lead 1-0. The Cougars plated two more runs with a Caitlyn Boteler double and a sacrifice fly from Elyse Goad to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Olympians (7-19) got on the board in the third when Saige Stahl led off with a single. Bailey Todd singled to put runners on first and second. Kenzie Foster then smacked a double to plate a run and cut the deficit to 3-1. East scored its second run when Kaitlin Brummett grounded into a fielder’s choice to make it 3-2 after three innings.
The Olympians took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with Stahl scoring on a passed ball and Todd scoring off a Cougar error to make it 4-3. Boteler tied the game at 4-4 for Bloomington North in the top of the fifth with a solo home run.
A couple of costly errors in the top of the sixth inning scored three more runs for the Cougars to make it 7-4.
East had a chance in the bottom of the sixth after Foster hit a two-out RBI double to cut it to 7-5. With runners on second and third, a strikeout occurred, ending the threat. Bloomington North then added three more insurance runs in the seventh to pull away.
For East, Stahl was 2 for 4 and scored three runs, Todd was 2 for 3 and scored two runs and Foster was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Brummett should see improvement next year with about all of his lineup returning.
“We lose Kaitlin (Brummett), but we do have a lot of talent that’s coming back,” Rusty Brummett said. “This team understands what it’s like to come together as a team and compete. I think we got a real chance to be real good next year. With a little experience and getting stronger over the summer, I think we’ve got a chance to come back and be really good.”
