- OLYMPIANS: 3
The first volleyball matchup between Columbus East and Bloomington South last month was a very close four-setter.
Thursday’s encore in the opening round of the East Sectional was even better.
It had to take a tiebreaking fifth set to decide the match in which the Olympians prevailed 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12.
The Class 4A No. 10 Panthers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but 4A No. 11 East slowly crawled back to tie the set at 8-8. Neither team had more than a two-point advantage until the Olympians rallied for three of the next four points to lead 19-16 that forced a Bloomington South timeout. Following the timeout, the Panthers scored four straight points to lead 20-19 that forced East to take a timeout to slow the momentum. With the set tied at 21-21, Bloomington South claimed the set by grabbing four of the next five points.

The Panthers grabbed the early advantage out of the gate in the second set, leading 9-5, but the Olympians came back to get within 11-10 until Bloomington South rallied for six straight points to lead 17-10 and force an Olympian timeout. The timeout worked as the Olympians got themselves back in the set scoring five straight points to cut the Panther lead to 17-15 until Bloomington South called a timeout. Later in the set with the Panthers leading 21-17, East scored four straight points to tie the set at 21-21. The momentum continued with East scored four of the last five points in the set capped off by a kill from Libby Dippold to tie the match at 1-1.
The third set was just as competitive. Bloomington South took a 6-3 lead, but then the Olympians came back to take the lead at 9-8 following a Cadence Gilley serving ace. A mini-run from the Panthers gave them a 12-9 advantage until East came back to tie it at 12-12. Later in the set, with Bloomington South leading 20-17, the Olympians went on a 6-1 run to lead 23-21 that forced a timeout from the Panthers. After Bloomington South scored the first point after the timeout, East used a Gabby Dean kill and a service ace from Reece Whitehead to claim the set 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Olympians jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set, but then play was stopped when Panthers coach Eugene Kim was given a yellow card for arguing for a possible lifting violation. After the delay for a few minutes, East picked things back up to lead 9-3, but Bloomington South rallied to tie the match at 9-9. The Olympians then led 11-10, but the Panthers scored four straight points to lead 14-11 to force an East timeout. Later in the set with the Olympians leading 20-15, the Panthers built enough cushion to claim the set and head to the tiebreaker.
East then led most of the way in the fifth set to take the match.
The Olympians (19-5) move on to face Bloomington North in the semifinals at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Columbus North and Martinsville will meet in the first semifinal at 11 a.m. The sectional final is at 7 p.m.
