Peyton Gray, who last week was named the American Association’s Relief Pitcher of the Year, has added another major honor from the Independent league.
The 2014 Columbus East graduate was selected as the American Association Rookie of the Year on Tuesday in a in a vote of the league’s managers, media representatives and team executives.
Gray did not allow a run in 32 innings pitched as the closer for the Milwaukee Milkmen this regular season. He went 3-0 with the 0.00 ERA and 56 strikeouts and only 10 walks.
The Milkmen entered Tuesday night’s Game 3 with a 2-0 lead over Sioux Falls in the league’s best-of-7 championship series. Gray pitched the ninth inning in each of the first two games, giving up his first run in an 11-6 win in Saturday’s Game 1 and earning the save in a 2-0 victory in Sunday’s Game 2.
